We are the world's largest library of free eBooks. Over 60,000 free public domain, epub, and Kindle eBooks in more than 20 languages. The collection is growing daily. Choose from fiction or nonfiction, classic literature or contemporary, poetry or science.
Thousands of volunteers have volunteered to scan, proofread, translate and format public domain or free epub eBooks. Visitors to Gutenberg.org can browse or search by domain, read the introductory overview of the eBook, or read the eBook itself. You can also find more information about a particular eBook at its Project Gutenberg page. Or use our Project Gutenberg book list to find more eBooks.
We love books. They are, in the end, the only lasting legacy from our lives. And books are dying. More than 8% of books published in 1940 have been lost. More than 10% of books published in 1990 have been lost. There are more than 10,000 active Gutenberg authors, and over 100,000 distinct titles. We have over 100,000 eBooks that are digitized and available for free.
Just search the list of authors and titles, or click on the author's name to see all her books. Some are best enjoyed in the original language, some are only available in English. Many have been updated with text conversion for Kindle devices and others are available in epub format. Some of the books were scanned at high resolution, others are converted at lower quality. Many are scanned from books that were scanned by the Library of Congress, and are thus free of most of the original text's errors.
Feel free to bookmark this site, and to share it with anyone you think may enjoy it. Or, if you're looking for a specific book, you can use the query function to search by title or by author's name.
The Project Gutenberg is the largest digital library in the world. It contains over 60,000 free eBooks. Choose among free epub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online. You will find the world's great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired.
We encourage our volunteers to do the same. Volunteers have digitized over 10 million pages from the library’s collection, and proofread them for quality, accuracy, and accessibility. If you would like to see your eBooks included in the collection, just start here, and your work will be published under a free Creative Commons license.
