As parents, our PTA members have been using books and web resources as tools and catalysts for conversations about race and racism. Learning to talk about race and white privilege and systemic racism is not easy but is an essential step on the journey to being the change we want to see and to raising our children to be committed to equity and justice.
These materials have been developed to provide a framework and guide for the facilitation of thoughtful and awareness-building conversations about the topic of race and racism. The intent is to help parents come into their own understanding of race and white privilege and to develop skills for them to engage in social justice activities with children. The materials were developed collaboratively with The Carter Center's Partnership for a Healthier Generation (P4G) program.
○ The Facilitator's Guide for Parent Kits: two-page facilitator's guide with instructions on how to facilitate the conversation in a group setting with up to 10 parents. This guide provides a variety of parent and child talking points and suggestions for further reading for parents. The guide encourages parents to first identify where they feel comfortable talking about race and own their own racial socialization in their families. The guide provides examples of talking points to help parents think through their own racial socialization. d2c66b5586
