The album cover is a stunning, aerial photograph of Joe's wife and first child, Thea Simms, in her bath, a mirror next to the tub. Joe's face is reflected in the mirror, a common visual trope of the time as a male singer appeared on the album cover.
Released by the Sire label in April of 1968, this sun-drenched, folk/psych/pop masterpiece was a favorite of four-time Grammy recipient, Richard Hell, and a favored contender for the best album of the year in Rolling Stone. This introduction of Joe's first solo album is successful in establishing the romantic, droll sensibility Joe's later work would exhibit.
And so, people always think of The Velvet Underground as one huge band. And they are, but there are a slew of a solo albums. There are also a slew of albums that were released only as singles. Among the best is Rock ‘N Roll,’ which also served as the title of the band’s debut album. Nevertheless, this album, which the quartet released on April 16th, 1967, has a one-of-a-kind album cover.
The album itself is a side-long epic which the quartet (Viola Davis, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Lou Reed) recorded in a single day (according to Cale) and that was released as a single. And the album cover is the first time in their career the band opted for one of their most famous and notorious images. In fact, it was the cover that made the band notorious.
It was after four group albums that the quartet returned to the recording studio. And they did it with the intention of finding a simple, one-day recording project. And in the end, that’s what they ended up with.
